Schutjer earn IIAC weekly honors
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – After
outstanding performances during the week, Simpson men's basketball
player Tim Dunlay earned Iowa Conference Athlete
of the Week honors while women's basketball player Stacey
Schutjer and women's track and field athlete
Lauren Bucklin took home performer of the week
honors for the period ending Feb. 7, the conference office
announced late Monday.
Dunlavy, a senior center from Bettendorf, Iowa, averaged 19.5
points and 13.5 rebounds per game as Simpson went 1-1 during the
week, snapping a six-game losing streak with a 75-73 win over
Wartburg Feb. 6. He recorded his fifth and sixth double-doubles of
the season, going for a season-high 29 points and career-high 17
rebounds against Luther. He turned in a 10-point, 10-rebound
performance against Wartburg.
Dunlavy becomes the first men's
basketball player to earn the award since he claimed the honor on
Dec. 1, 2008. One of the most accomplished basketball players in
Simpson's history, Dunlavy is a two-time first team all-conference
selection and earlier this year became the 17th member of Simpson's
1,000-point club. He currently has 1,295 career points, ninth on
the Storm's all-time list.
Schutjer, a sophomore center from Titonka, Iowa, averaged 16.0
points and 9.0 rebounds per game as Simpson went 2-0 last week in
extending its winning streak to 10 games. She tallied her fourth
double-double of the season in a 74-58 win over Luther Feb. 3,
adding five blocks and three steals. She also scored a team-high 19
points as the Storm avenged their only conference loss to date with
an 84-63 win over Wartburg Feb. 6.
Schutjer becomes the third women's basketball player to earn
performer of the week honors this year, as she collects the award
for the second time. She leads the team in scoring (16.6 points per
game) and rebounding (6.3 rebounds per game), putting her third and
fifth in the conference, respectively. Simpson owns a two-game lead
in the conference standings with three games to go as it looks for
a third-consecutive regular season crown.
Bucklin, a senior from Bondurant, Iowa, posted an NCAA
provisional-qualifying mark in the 55-meter hurdles for the second
weekend in a row with an 8.48-second clocking in the prelims at the
Cornell Hilltop Invitational Saturday, Feb. 6. She won the event
with a time of 8.57 seconds in the finals, finished second in the
200 (27.21) and ran on Simpson's winning 4x400-meter relay
(4:03.43).
Bucklin wins the award for the second week in a row and the fifth time in the past two seasons. A five-time All-American hurdler, she is the defending outdoor IIAC Most Valuable Performer and comes off a 2009 season which saw her earn All-American honors in the 55-meter hurdles indoors and the 100 and 400-meter hurdles outdoors.
