Men's Basketball earns crucial win over Dubuque on senior night

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Simpson snapped a six-game skid by knocking off Dubuque 79-66 as the Storm honored three seniors pregame on Saturday afternoon.

After turning a double-digit Dubuque (14-9, 7-7 A-R-C) lead into a five-point edge at halftime, Simpson (9-14, 6-8 A-R-C) was carried by Bo Huston and Calix Cahill offensively in the second half. The pair combined for 30 of their 43 points in the second half alone, led by Huston's 17 second half points. Cahill ended the night with a career-high 22 points, 10 rebounds in just 23 minutes of action. Huston finished with 21 points, three rebounds, and three assists.

As a team, Simpson finished 27-for-61 (44.3 percent) from the field, but a solid 12-for-28 (42.9 percent) beyond the arc. Guards Levi Gurwell and Cam Henderson combined for 28 points with Henderson adding six rebounds, and four assists. Simpson outrebounded the Spartans 43-to-38 and collected 17 assists on 10 turnovers with seven blocks, five coming from Brogan Fuller.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Simpson started the game cold offensively, falling to a 12-point deficit midway through the first half.
  • The offense found its footing in the final minutes of the first half, turning the 12-point deficit into a five-point lead at the break.
  • Huston and Cahill accounted for all of Simpson's points in the opening six and half minutes of action in the second half until Gurwell scored at the 13:37 mark.
  • With the score nearly locked at 43-42, Simpson used a 14-to-3 run to break open its first double-digit lead of the ballgame.
  • Simpson continued to put the pressure on the Spartans down the stretch, never allowing Dubuque's offense to get into a rhythm.
  • Clutch free throws and a key offensive rebound tip-in by Cahill was enough for Simpson to close out the 12-point win and move into a tie for fifth in the A-R-C standings.
