Hot shooting continues as Simpson upends Dubuque for first time since 2019

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Levi Gurwell and Cam Henderson combined for 49 points on the road as Simpson knocked off Dubuque 88-73 for the first win over the Spartans since 2019.

A second half run of 16-2 over three minutes of action proved to be the difference maker for Simpson (8-8, 5-2 A-R-C). The combo of guards Cam Henderson and Levi Gurwell, who went for 24 and 25 points respectively, provided the firepower needed for Simpson's fifth win in six games.

As a team, Simpson shot efficiently from the floor, going 30-for-56 (53.6 percent) from the field, 8-for-21 (38.1 percent) beyond the arc, and 20-for-25 (80 percent) at the line. Overall, Simpson outrebound Dubuque (10-6, 3-4) 37-to-29, along with 18 assists to 17 turnovers, seven steals, and 24 points off turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Gurwell pushed the Storm to a quick lead, scoring 10 of Simpson's opening 14 points highlighted by two 3-pointers.
• The Spartans and Simpson went back and forth throughout most of the first half, matching each other to a 35-35 score at halftime.
• Henderson and Gurwell began the second half on fire, scoring the first 17 points of the half and giving Simpson the 52-46 lead.
• The Storm broke open the game with a 16-2 run over three minutes of action, going from a one-point edge to 15 with 9:30 left on the clock.
• Dubuque found no answer in the second after the run to get back into the game, with Simpson securing the 15-point win at the free throw line down the stretch.
