Second half surge powers Simpson to a 14-point win over Coe

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Second half adjustments, led by Calix Cahill's 22-point, seven-rebound performance, lifted Simpson to a 78-64 statement win over Coe on Saturday afternoon.

Simpson (6-8, 3-2 A-R-C) trailed by six at halftime but flipped the script on the Coe Kohawks (10-5, 2-4 A-R-C), outsourcing them 42-22 for a convincing 78-64 win. Calix Cahill continued to make waves in American Rivers action, leading all scorers with his 22 points coming on 9-for-11 shooting inside the arc, along with seven rebounds. Levi Gurwell supplied 21 points, including three 3-pointers, and four steals and three assists.

As a team, Simpson finished 29-for-62 (46.8 percent) from the field, 8-for-22 (36.4 percent) beyond the arc, and 12-for-13 (92.3 percent) at the line. The Storm grabbed 32 rebounds, and collected 13 assists on only eight turnovers with nine steals and three blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Coe controlled the opening ten minutes of action, jumping out to a 26-17 lead, their largest of the game.
  • Simpson began chipping away at the lead over the rest of the first half, getting it down to just one, 33-32, after a 3-pointer from Gurwell at the 3:51 mark.
  • Both sides traded baskets back-and-forth down the stretch with Coe taking the 42-36 advantage into the locker room.
  • Two quick baskets from Cahill jumpstarted Simpson's offense to begin the second half, cutting the lead once again to one possession.
  • Simpson continued to apply pressure to the Kohawk defense, eventually tying the score at the 11:08 mark on a 3-pointer from Brogan Fuller. Cahill converted on the next possession, giving Simpson the lead; one the Storm refused to give up again.
  • Three 3-pointers from Cam Henderson quickly made it a nine-point edge for Simpson with just five minutes to go.
