Buena Vista escapes with one-point win over the Storm

STORM LAKE, Iowa - Down to the final possession for the second straight game, Simpson was unable to come up with the game-winning bucket, falling 72-71 to Buena Vista on Saturday.

Calix Cahill led the way for Simpson (8-13, 5-7 A-R-C) in multiple categories including 18 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Isaac Averill added 13 points with four rebounds, three steals, and two assists. The two had an opportunity on the final possession but neither were able to convert against Buena Vista.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A pair of 3-pointers from Levi Gurwell gave Simpson the early jolt as the Storm pushed out to an 11-2 lead.
  • Buena Vista managed to tie the score up at 12-12 before both sides traded the lead back-and-forth throughout most of the first half.
  • The Beavers closed out the half on an 8-2 run to take a 37-32 lead into the locker room.
  • Cahill and Cam Henderson connected on the first few possessions of the second half to tie up the game before an Averill 3-pointer put Simpson back on top.
  • Much like the first half, both sides remained gridlocked with each other with the score tied 66-66 with just 3:47 left.
  • Six straight points by the Beavers was followed by a pair of free throws for Cahill and a Brogan Fuller layup.
  • After a turnover by BVU, Cahill was fouled down by two but made one to cut the score to 72-71 with 43 seconds left.
  • Cahill and Averill provided the defensive stop with a block and a steal for a chance for Simpson to win on the final possession.
  • In the final look, Averill missed a 3-pointer but an offensive rebound gave Cahill another attempt but Simpson was unable to convert, falling on the road.
