Simpson falls to No. 7 Saint Mary's

WINONA, Minn. - Despite a strong pitching performance from Alyssa Breckner against seventh-ranked Saint Mary's, Simpson fell 3-1 in extra innings on Friday morning.
The Storm connected on nine hits throughout the game, but were unable to capitalize, leaving nine runners on base. Breckner held a top-ranked offense in Saint Mary's in check for most of the game, limiting the Cardinals to only one run over seven innings. With the loss, Simpson will face the winner of the Husson/DePauw game for another chance to reach the regional championship.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Saint Mary's recorded two quick outs to start the game before a single, stolen base, and a triple put the first run of the game on the board.
- Simpson's first opportunity to put runs up on the board came in the third inning that started with a lead-off single by Fowler. After a sac bunt and a walk, a groundball to third forced out Fisk for the second out. Heidelbauer drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases for Ehlers but Simpson was unable to capitalize, leaving the bases loaded.
- After leaving another two runners on in the fifth, Simpson managed to break through in the sixth. Two quick outs followed by a single from Ginnaty gave life to a rally. Fowler drove a ball down the right field line for an RBI double to tie up the game at 1-1.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Simpson led off with a walk and single to put two on with nobody out. A sac bunt by Heidelbauer followed by a walk loaded the bases once again for Simpson. However a fly out from James proved to be not deep enough as Saint Mary's threw out Kriegel at the plate to send the game into extra innings.
- Saint Mary's kept the momentum rolling, scoring two runs in the eighth before quieting the Simpson bats to secure the 3-1 result.
