Storm tally 5-4 victory over Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- The Simpson College men's tennis team got its revenge on Saturday by handing Cornell its first loss of the year in a close-knit 5-4 match, six months after the Rams gave the Storm a season-opening defeat.

Simpson (1-5) won two of the three doubles matches to gain an early 2-1 advantage. Cornell (4-1) won at No. 1 doubles before the tandem of Peter Walkwitz and Ethan Humble prevailed 8-4 at No. 3 doubles to tie the match. Reade Reiter and Brett Dewerff collected an 8-5 triumph in the No. 2 pairing to put the Storm up one.

Aaron Price cruised to a win at No. 2 singles with set scores of 6-1, 6-2 to extend the tilt to 3-1. After the Rams knotted the contest at 3-3 by winning the No. 1 and 3 singles matches, Walkwitz stopped the momentum by taking his bout at No. 4 singles. Walkwitz won the opening set 6-1 before having to play a tiebreaker in the second to win 7-6 (11-9).

Dewerff provided the game-winner at No. 6 singles while giving Simpson its fifth triumph of the day. The senior won 6-4, 6-1 for his first triumph of the spring season.
