Simpson drops two in spring opener

LAKEVILLE, Minn. -- The Simpson College men's tennis team opened its spring slate on Saturday with a doubleheader against Northwestern-St. Paul, but dropped both matches.

The Storm (0-3) were in action for the first time since competing Sept. 26 in the American Rivers Conference Individual Tournament. The Eagles (2-0) claimed both matches today by scores of 7-2, 7-2.

In the opening match, sophomore Caleb Vasconez won at No. 3 singles. Vasconez had to bounce back after dropping the first set, but came back to win 6-0 in the second and 10-6 in the third. Sophomore Ethan Humble prevailed at No. 5 singles in a three-set match for the team's only points in the opener.

The sophomore tandem of Chase Henry and Jake Brend were victorious at No. 3 doubles in the second match for Simpson's lone doubles triumph on the afternoon. Henry and Brend were able to take down Northwestern-St. Paul's Zachary Revenig and Collin Hemann, 8-4.

Henry kept the momentum into singles play for Simpson to win 6-2, 6-3 for the team's lone victory in individual play in the second bout. Senior Brett Dewerff was close to winning at No. 4 singles in a three-set match that didn't fall his way.

Up Next
Simpson competes against Coe and Wisconsin-La Crosse this Saturday in Cedar Rapids. The first match will begin at 10 a.m. against the Kohawks.
