Simpson splits doubleheader with Hamline behind Shaffer’s near no-hitter

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson College baseball team split a nonconference doubleheader with Hamline, falling 11-2 in game one before bouncing back with a 4-0 shutout in the finale behind Jack Shaffer's near no-hitter.

Shaffer carried a no-hit bid into the ninth inning and recorded two outs before Hamline (8-9) broke it up on a 1-2 pitch. Jacob Roberts and Preston Glatt hit run-scoring singles to give Simpson (9-6) an early lead, while Kasey Carter added insurance in the seventh with a pair of RBIs. 

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • The Pipers scored once in the second before erupting for seven runs in the third, capitalizing on a mix of hits, errors and wild pitches to build a 7-0 lead.
  • Simpson got on the board in the fourth with two unearned runs, but Hamline added four more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

GAME TWO SUMMARY

  • The Storm opened the scoring in the fourth on an RBI single from Jacob Roberts and added a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Preston Glatt. Simpson added insurance in the seventh on a two-run fielder's choice from Kasey Carter.
  • Jack Shaffer was in control throughout, allowing his first baserunner on a leadoff walk in the fourth. He worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth by striking out the final two batters of the inning and stranded runners at third in the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings.
  • Shaffer carried the no-hit bid into the ninth before Hamline broke it up with a two-out single on a 1-2 pitch, finishing with a one-hit shutout.
