Simpson picks up 3-1 win before weather cuts doubleheader short
DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Simpson College baseball team earned a 3-1 win in game one of its doubleheader against Minnesota Morris but saw game two halted in the fifth inning due to lightning.
In game one, the Storm (6-4) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth when Tyler Deal doubled to left center to bring home Drew Carlson, who opened the inning with a bunt single. Jacob Roberts extended the lead with a two-run home run to left field, scoring Deal and giving Simpson a 3-0 advantage.
Minnesota Morris (4-9) answered in the sixth, but Dylan Schlee limited the damage to one by recording a strikeout to end the inning. He then worked a 1-2-3 seventh to secure his 10th career save, tying the program record. Carlson earned the win on the hill, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four over 5.1 innings of work.
Simpson had built a 3-0 lead in the second game before weather intervened. Dalton Ferrin recorded an RBI triple, Trenten Kingrey added a sacrifice fly, and Tijmen Nagel pushed the lead to 3-0 with a base hit in the fifth.
