Simpson snags opener, nearly steals nightcap at Nebraska Wesleyan

LINCOLN, Neb. – In Tuesday night's American Rivers Conference doubleheader action, the Simpson College baseball team defeated Nebraska Wesleyan 5-1 before falling short 5-3 despite a late rally.

Kasey Carter led Simpson (13-19, 7-11 A-R-C) with two RBIs in the opener and went 3-for-4 at the plate with another RBI in game two, helping ignite the Storm's ninth inning rally that fell just short.

On the mound, Eli Feekin delivered six solid innings to earn the win in game one. Mitchell Roeder and Dante Dolash combined for three scoreless frames in relief to close it out. In game two, Zach Dueker provided a bright spot with three shutout innings out of the bullpen.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • Nebraska Wesleyan (19-15, 8-10 A-R-C) used an unearned run in the second to take a 1-0 lead, but Simpson rattled off five straight runs to win by four.
  • Nate Cagley drove in the first run with a single in the third, scoring Drew Carlson who was hit by pitch with two outs.
  • The Storm capitalized on an error by the Prairie Wolves to take a 3-1 lead in the fourth.
  • Kasey Carter brought the fourth and fifth runs home with a two-out double to left field in the seventh.
  • Mitchell Roeder took over for Eli Feekin and allowed just one hit between the seventh and eighth. Dante Dolash closed out the ninth with three straight outs.

GAME TWO SUMMARY

  • The Prairie Wolves built a 5-0 lead through three innings and reigning A-R-C Pitcher of the Week Robbie Ross held Simpson without a hit until the fifth inning.
  • The Storm cracked the scoreboard in the seventh thanks to an RBI single by Dalton Ferrin.
  • Simpson mounted a rally in the ninth as an RBI single by Kasey Carter scored one run to make it 5-2. Another runner crossed home plate for the Storm on a wild pitch, but the rally ended there.
