Kohawks sneak away with one-run decisions

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson College baseball team dropped a couple of tough one-run decisions to RV Coe on Wednesday at McBride Field.

The Storm (8-12, 3-4 A-R-C) battled tough in both games, bringing the winning run to the plate in the first game before taking a 3-2 lead into the ninth inning of game two. However, Coe (15-4, 5-1 A-R-C) found a way to edge out both victories by identical 4-3 scores.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • Both teams scored two runs on three hits in the first inning. Ian Baldwin jumpstarted the Storm offense with a leadoff double and later scored on a Drew Carlson single up the middle.
  • Nate Cagley delivered a two-out RBI single down the right field line to plate Carlson shortly after.
  • Carlson continued his hot day at the plate in the third, launching a solo home run to right field to put Simpson ahead 3-2.
  • Coe responded with a two-run fourth to reclaim the lead, and despite multiple scoring opportunities, the Storm couldn't break through in the late innings. Simpson threatened in every frame except the sixth but ultimately left empty-handed.

  • Coe leveled the game in the seventh, but the Storm took the lead right back on an RBI double from Ian Baldwin.
  • Reliever Charley Mershon held the Kohawks in check with a dominant 1-2-3 eighth, but a pair of costly errors and a single in the ninth allowed Coe to plate two unearned runs and steal another 4-3 victory.
