Simpson falls short in close losses to Augsburg

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson College baseball team came up just short in both games of Sunday's doubleheader against Augsburg.

Despite a strong effort from Nate Cagley and a four-run rally in the sixth inning, the Storm (2-5) couldn't recover from an early deficit and a five-run surge by Augsburg (5-1) in the opener, ultimately falling 9-7. In game two, Eli Feekin put on a dominant performance on the mound, striking out nine and allowing just two hits through 7.2 scoreless innings. However, a late breakthrough by the Auggies in the ninth handed the Storm a 4-1 loss.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • Augsburg came out swinging early, taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Simpson answered back with two runs in the bottom half, courtesy of a double by Nate Cagley to right center, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
  • The Auggies responded with five more runs across the next four innings, including two in both the second and third, and one more in the fifth.
  • Simpson didn't back down, as Cagley delivered another key hit in the fifth, driving in a run with a single to right.
  • The Storm added four more runs in the sixth, but it wasn't enough to overcome Augsburg's lead.
