Explosive sixth inning powers Storm to run-rule win over Augsburg

NORWALK, Iowa – Fueled by a massive seven-run explosion in the sixth inning, the Simpson College baseball team earned an 11-1 run-rule victory over Augsburg to open a three-game series.

Bryson Gibson spearheaded the Storm's offense, reaching base in all four plate appearances while going 2-for-2 with two walks and three RBIs. On the mound, Trey Castile delivered a stellar six-inning performance, striking out seven while surrendering just one run and two walks.

SCORING SUMMARY

  • Ian Baldwin led off the first inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He scored on Bryson Gibson's double to centerfield as Simpson (2-3) took an early edge.
  • The Auggies (3-1) answered in the second, taking advantage of a hit batter and a follow-up double to bring in their lone run.
  • In the third, Simpson regained control. After loading the bases via two hit batters and a walk, Will Carlock delivered a clutch two-run single down the left field line to put the Storm back on top, 3-1.
  • The Storm erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning to stretch the lead to 10-1. Matthew Florence and Trenten Kingrey recorded back-to-back singles before a two-run hit by Bryson Gibson and a flurry of Auggie errors put the game out of reach.
  • Simpson sealed the run-rule victory in the seventh when Baldwin laced a single down the right field line, scoring Florence.
