Simpson women win record third dual

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Simpson women's swimming team became the first in program history to reach the three-win mark, beating Morningside 86-60 Saturday afternoon at the Simpson pool.

Second-year head coach Aaron Strain and the Storm currently boast an overall record of 3-3, the highest single-season win total since Simpson began its swimming program in 1997.

In its first year of existence, the men's team continues to make strides. Simpson won five events on the day, falling to Morningside 65-59. The six-point margin is Simpson's closest deficit in five duals this season.

"I am so proud of the way that the whole team performed today," Strain said. "We have been working hard in practice and have made some nice strides preparing us for the remainder of the season. I am excited about our last meets because of the effort that the team is putting in I expect some great times."

Lauren Frodyma (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Underwood) and Keely Goshia (Mead, Colo./Niwot) each turned in two individual first-place finishes for the Storm. Goshia added another win in the first event of the day, the 200-meter medley relay.

Trailing going into the third leg (breaststroke), Goshia put Simpson in the lead. In the freestyle leg, Becca Harris (Grinnell, Iowa/Grinnell) held on to the lead for a Storm victory.

Frodyma won the 800-meter freestyle (11:28.80) and the 400-meter freestyle (5:33.77). Goshia earned individual honors in the 100-meter butterfly (1:15.27) and the 100-meter breaststroke (1:29.25).

Harris and Catherine Mayes (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) provided Simpson's other first-place finishes, as Harris won the 50-meter freestyle (31.57) and Mayes triumphed in the 200-meter IM (2:54.00).

On the men's side, Terry Hodge (Kansas City, Mo./Raytown) took home a pair of individual honors and Andrew Kline (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central) added the other. Simpson also led the field in the 200-meter medley relay.

Kline triumphed in the 800-meter freestyle, finishing in a time of 12:59.32, his first win in the event this season. Hodge won the 200-meter IM (2:44.95) and the 100-meter breaststroke (1:19.67).

Simpson returns to action Friday, Feb. 5 when it travels to Fort Dodge to face Iowa Central CC. The dual begins at 6 p.m.
