Storm tripped up by Trine at College World Series

SALEM, Va. - Defensive miscues proved fatal as Simpson suffered its first loss of the Women's College World Series to the defending national champions Trine on Friday.

Simpson (40-7) gave up nine runs, two of which were earned, as Trine (40-6) capitalized on four Storm errors. Trine used a three-run spot in the first and second to quickly jump out in front before sealing the game with two more in the fifth.

The Storm now head to the elimination bracket with a date against Linfield tomorrow, May 30 at 10 a.m. Linfield dropped its first game of the tournament to Redlands before rallying back to upset top-seed Virginia Wesleyan earlier in the day.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Trine took advantage of a Simpson error in the first inning, along with a single to set up a two-out three-run home run to put the Thunder on the board first.
  • In the second, more Storm miscues allowed Trine to put another three-spot up on the board to extend their lead to 6-0.
  • Mackenzie James gave Simpson its first spark of the game, leading off the fourth with a double in the left center gap. Katie Shaner followed suit with a single up the middle, driving in James, giving Simpson its first run of the afternoon.
  • Trine added one back in the fourth before a two-out single to right in the fifth plated the two final runs to seal the win for the Thunder.
  • Emma LaFave got the start in the circle for the Storm, going two innings, giving up six runs but none were earned. Marina Cronin followed out of the pen, tossing 2.2 innings with two punchouts.
