WAVERLY, Iowa - Addison Gookin went yard twice as 12th-ranked Simpson dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Wartburg to open A-R-C play on Wednesday.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- Simpson struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning on back-to-back RBI doubles by Mackenzie James and Katie Shaner.
- Wartburg responded back with three runs in the first, and added to the lead with two more in the fourth.
- The score held 5-2 until the sixth when Addison Gookin brought home two on her single followed by Caelynn Obleton tying the game with a double.
- Wartburg once again responded by scoring one in the sixth to take a 7-6 lead heading into the seventh.
- Megan Heidelbauer tied up the game with a sac fly before Shaner put the Storm on top with an RBI double. Gookin struck again, this time a two-run home run to break open a 9-6 lead for Simpson with three outs needed for the win.
- However, Wartburg refused to give in, scoring four runs in the final inning to comeback and defeat the Storm 10-9.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- The Knights scored twice in the first and kept the Storm bats quiet until the fourth when Gookin jumpstarted the offense with a solo shot.
- Cheyenne Jones, later in the fourth, tied up the ballgame at 2-2 with her RBI single, scoring Rowen Fisk.
- Wartburg jumped back out on top in the bottom of the fourth, using a five-run inning to create a lead.
- With the bases-loaded in the fifth, James drove in a pair with a double in the gap, cutting the lead down to three.
- However, after a Wartburg pitching change, the Knights managed to escape the inning with two fly outs and a fielder's choice, leaving the bases loaded.
- Simpson's comeback attempt was cut short as the game was called due to weather heading into the bottom of the fifth, securing the 7-4 win for Wartburg.
