Schmitz elevated to assistant athletic director role overseeing new athletic performance model

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Sam Schmitz has been promoted to assistant athletic director for athletic performance, a new leadership role in which he will oversee the integration of sports performance, sports medicine, and sports nutrition under a new unified athletic performance model.

Schmitz will continue in his role as director of sports performance while taking on broader responsibilities that include coordinating communication, scheduling, and strategic planning across the three departments to support collaboration and efficiency.

"With the unprecedented growth of our athletic programs, the need for efficiency, communication, and collaboration has never been greater," said director of athletics Marty Bell. "The health, wellness, and care of our student-athletes remain our top priority, and this new model is a proactive step toward minimizing injury risk and maximizing performance. Sam is a proven leader with great vision and commitment to our performance efforts, and I'm confident he will thrive in this expanded role."

Rebby Kimzey remains director of sports medicine and will oversee a team of six full-time athletic trainers providing year-round coverage and care for Simpson's athletic programs. With Schmitz providing administrative support, Kimzey will focus more deeply on clinical care and medical operations.

Matt Costenson-Segura will now serve as associate director of sports performance, and Missy Anker will continue leading the sports nutrition department. Both will collaborate closely with Schmitz and Kimzey to support the overall health, development and performance of Simpson's student-athletes.
