Simpson moves up to fifth on day two of IIAC Championship
STORM LAKE - Matt Spaulding fired a 2-over 74 on the day, helping the Simpson men's golf team move up to fifth place after two rounds at the Iowa Conference Men's Golf Championship on Sunday.
The Storm shaved 23 strokes off their team total from round one to round two, shooting a 305 on Sunday for a 36-hole total of 633.
Central leads the tournament (602), followed by Loras (624) and Buena Vista (625). Luther is fourth with 633, followed by Simpson, Dubuque (637), Coe (645), Wartburg (648) and Cornell (723).
Seeking an all-conference nod, Spaulding (Fonda, Iowa) improved three strokes in the second round for a 36-hole total of 151, tied for fourth with Central's Brent Messmore. Sam Herrmann of Loras leads the tournament with a 146, shooting 1-over 73s in the first and second rounds.
Returing all-conference performer James Montgomery (Knoxville, Iowa) improved his standing in the tournament one spot after carding a 3-over 75 on Sunday. He shot a 79 on Saturday, giving him a two-round total of 154, good for sole possession of eighth place.
Connor Juilfs (Newell, Iowa) moved up eight spots from 32nd to a tie for 24th after improving 8 strokes with a 76 on Sunday. He owns a two-day total of 162.
Nick Tanner (Sheldon, Iowa) climbed two spots, improving nine shots with an 80 on Sunday for a total score of 169. He is tied for 37th.
Grant Northway's (Altoona, Iowa) 91 gives him a 177, tied for 42nd.
