Juilfs leads Simpson to 10th at Buena Vista

STORM LAKE - Connor Juilfs fired a 2-over 74 in the second round of the Buena Vista Invitational on Saturday, tying for 12th and leading Simpson to a 10th place finish of 25 teams.

Simpson shot a 628 (321, 307) on the weekend, the team's lowest two-round total of the season. The Storm finished within five strokes of sxith-place Northwestern, and trailed ninth-place Briar Cliff by a single stroke. Nebraska Wesleyan won the tournament (590), followed by Central Red (596) and Wartburg (603).

The Storm's 307 on Saturday marks the lowest team round of the spring season and the lowest since firing a 304 in the second round of the William Penn Statesmen Fall Classic on Oct. 12, 2010.

After shooting a 78 on Friday, Juilfs improved four shots on Saturday for Simpson's lowest individual round of the spring season. His two-day total of 152 put him in a six-way tie for 12th.

Matt Spaulding turned in the team's second-best effort on the weekend, tying for 35th with a 156 (79, 77). James Montgomery shaved seven strokes from round one to round two, firing a 76 in the second round for a 159 (83, 76), tying for 50th.

Nick Tanner finished with a 166 (81, 85) to tie for 86th and Grant Northway improved 13 shots on Saturday for a 173 (93, 80) to finish in a tie for 112th. Matt Haley rounded out Simpson's effort with a 175 (92, 83), tying for 118th.

Simpson returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Oskaloosa for the William Penn Southern Iowa Classic.
