Spaulding takes fourth at Simpson Invitational

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Senior Matt Spaulding (Newell, Iowa) shot a 3-over 74 on Tuesday, finishing in a tie for fourth and helping Simpson take second at the Simpson Fall Invitational at Indianola Country Club.

Spaulding - the winner of last year's fall invitational - was one of three players tied for fourth, sitting two strokes behind tournament medalist, Ben Kern of Grand View. AIB took the team title at the 18-hole invitational, scoring a 299.

Simpson sat nine strokes off the pace at 308, followed by William Penn (312) and Coe (319). William Penn's second team took fifth (342), Coe's second team was sixth (352), followed by Marshalltown CC (355), a second Simpson team (360) and Southwestern CC (368).

Competing in only his second collegiate tournament, Connor Juilfs (Newell, Iowa) tied with teammate Grant Northway (Knoxville, Iowa) and William Penn's Seth Vernon for ninth after carding a 6-over 77. Sophomore Matt Haley (Corning, Iowa) rounded out the Simpson golfers in the top 20, shooting a 9-over 80 to end in a four-way tie for 18th.
