Storm extend winning streak to five
INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Simpson women's tennis team swept a pair of home matches against Northwest Iowa opponents Saturday, beating Morningside and Buena Vista by identical 7-2 scores.
The Storm (6-3, 4-2 Iowa Conference) extended their winning streak to five with only four matches remaining before the Iowa Conference Tournament.
Against the Mustangs (3-2), Simpson got singles wins from Mikayla Struebing, Allison Anderson, Lindsay Nash, Lynae Gruber and Whitney Thompson. Struebing beat Audri Swisher 6-3, 6-4 at the top spot, Anderson cruised against Mary Horton 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, Nash beat Kassie Hein 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4, Gruber topped Megan Solberg 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5 and Thompson got past Shannon Schroeder at the sixth spot, 6-1, 6-2.
Tiffany Bost and Anderson teammed up for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles and Gruber and Nash won by the same score at No. 3.
Despite the same outcome in the second match of the day, the Storm had to win three tiebreakers in singles play agaisnt the Beavers (2-7, 0-6).
Struebing battled with Emily Gutsch for a hard-fought, 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 win at No. 1 singles. Anderson dropped the second set before going on to a 6-3, 5-7, 10-1 win against Elizabeth Heffernan at No. 3 and Nash won 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 against Mary Jane Ferguson at the fourth spot.
The team of Bost and Anderson won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles and Gruber and Nash won by the same score at No. 3.
Simpson will shoot for its fifth conference win of the season when it travels to Central on Tuesday, Sept. 27 in a 3:30 p.m. start in Pella.
