Storm fall to Cornell, Coe
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Simpson women's tennis team fell in a pair of Iowa Conference matches Saturday, losing a hard-fought match to Cornell 5-4 before losing to Coe, 9-0.
The match against the Rams came down to No. 5 singles, where Ellie Purdy inched past Lynae Gruber in a third and deciding set, 2-6, 6-1, 14-12. Allison Anderson took a three set victory over Alyssa Zavislak at No. 3 (4-6, 6-4, 10-7), Lindsay Nash won in straight sets over Kara Middleton at No. 4 (6-4, 6-2) and Whitney Thompson won the deciding set against Kathleen Ellis at the No. 6 spot (4-6, 6-2, 10-8).
In doubles action, the team of Nash and Gruber out-lasted Purdy and Claudia Landsman 8-6 at No. 3.
The Storm (1-2, 1-2 IIAC) had a tough time against Coe, failing to notch a win. The No. 2 doubles team of Mikayla Struebing and Nash gave Simpson and head coach Linsay Chase its best opportunity before falling to Sarah Ohlman and Jackie Pederson, 8-5.
Simpson opens its home schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 7 when Graceland visits Buxton Tennis Complex in a 3:30 p.m. matchup.
