Storm move into fourth after third round of IIAC Championship
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Stacy Bergeson carded the low score of the third round on Friday and the Simpson women's golf team improved to fourth place at the Iowa Conference Championship from a windy Lake Creek Country Club.
Simpson leap-frogged Loras, shooting a 360 to improve from fifth to fourth. Entering the day trailing Loras by three strokes, the Storm posted a 40-stroke turnaround on the Duhawks.
Wartburg remains atop the team leaderboard (996). Central is second (1007), Luther is third (1,039) and Simpson is fourth (1,046). Buena Vista and Loras are tied for fifth (1,083).
Bergeson started the round in 19th place, but catapaulted into a tie for fifth after turning in her lowest scorecard of the season for the third-straight round. Her 80 on Friday was four strokes better than Luther's Annika Ring and beat the 87 and 85 she posted on the tournament's opening weekend.
The sophomore trails Buena Vista's Kylie Hammer by a stroke with 18 holes to play.
Jennifer Gaffney kept her bid for an all-conference nod alive with a 90, leaving her in sole possession of 10th place. She sits one stroke behind Wartburg's Morgan McMillin.
Taylor Hillery is in 19th after her 95, Molly Hill carded a 95 as well and is tied for 27th. Jennifer Stumpf's 107 puts her in 35th place.
Central's Sarah Pualson leads the individual race by five stroke's over Wartburg's Paige Klostermann.
The Championship concludes Saturday with a final 18 holes on the par-72 layout at Lake Creek. Coe, Dubuque, and Cornell tee off in the first flight beginning at 9 a.m., followed by players from Simpson, Buena Vista, and Loras at approximately 9:50 a.m. The final wave -- featuring players from Wartburg, Central, and Luther -- will take to the course beginning at approximately 10:40 a.m.
