Strong second half gives Simpson 3-1 win
INDIANOLA, Iowa - Spending most of the second half in the attacking third of the field, the Simpson men's soccer team posted 3-1, season-opening win against Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday night.
A trio of second-half goals erased a 1-0 halftime deficit, giving the Storm (1-0) their first season-opening win during head coach Mike Wilson's six-year tenure.
"In the first half we needed to settle in a little bit, but we made the adjustments we needed to in the second half," Wilson said. "At halftime we talked about being more connected, and in the second half we were able to push forward."
Jeremy Reinert made the initial push for the Storm when he headed a bouncing ball over Nebraska Wesleyan goalkeeper Scott Sutherland for the equalizer in the 47th minute.
Just over three minutes later, another run by Reinert led to the go-ahead goal. A dangerous shot from the sophomore deflected off Sutherland's hands, leaving an easy put-back for Sam Hoover. Lucas Haack added an insurance goal in the 81st minute, settling on the far post for a header off a corner kick from Mark Lahart.
Brad Fullerton scored the only goal for Nebraska Wesleyan. The Prairie Wolves (0-1) surrendered a lead against Simpson for the second-straight year, as they opened up a 2-0 lead in the 2009 only to settle for a 2-2 tie.
