Storm open season with 4th, 5th place finishes
INDIANOLA, Iowa - James Montogmery (Knoxville, Iowa/Knoxville) and Nick Tanner (Sheldon, Iowa/Sheldon) tied for second after shooting a 2-over 73 at the season-opening Simpson Spring Invitational Tuesday at Indianola Golf and Country Club. The Simpson Gold team placed fourth while Simpson Red sat one stroke behind in fifth.
Grand View won the team title with a score of 304, topping the 16 team field that consisted of 99 golfers. Wartburg took second (310) and Iowa Wesleyan placed third (317). Simpson Gold placed fourth (318) followed by Simpson Red (319). Grand View's Justin Livingston claimed medalist honors after turning in a 71.
Hitting the course for the first time in the spring season, four Simpson golfers placed in the top-20. Following Montgomery and Tanner, Luke Goemaat (Albia, Iowa/Albia) of the Gold team and Michael Peterson (Emmetsburg, Iowa/Emmetsburg) of the Red team found themselves in a five-way tie for 14th after shooting an 8-over 79.
Rounding at the Red team, Jon Sukut (Ankeny, Iowa/North Polk) tied for 37th (83), Matt Spaulding (Fonda, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) tied for 42nd (84) and John Richter (Marshalltown, Iowa/GMG) tied for 55th (86). On the Gold team, Adam Walker (Adel, Iowa/ADM) tied for 30th (82), Grant Northway (Altoona, Iowa/Grandview Park Baptist) tied for 42nd (84) and Marc Don Carlos (Greenfield, Iowa/Totino Grace) tied for 81st (93). Mitch Bracker (Neola, Iowa/Tri-Center Neola) tied for 66th (88), John Holtzman (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) tied for 71st (89) and Travis McGinley (Hambrug, Iowa/Nebraska City) tied for 97th (104) participating as individuals.
Simpson returns to action April 5-6 at the Grand View Invitational, held at Harvest Golf Club in Rhodes.
