Barragan's big day not enough in 58-53 loss

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Andrew Dau's 3-pointer with 40 seconds left brought Simpson to within a bucket, but Augustana's Bryant Voiles answered with a three of his own to propell the Vikings to a season-opening 58-53 victory over Simpson Monday night at the Carver PE Center.

Dau finished with 15 points for Simpson (0-1), adding a team-high six rebounds.  Zack Barragan's career-high 16 points led all scorers, as he went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Tim Dunlavy had six points and grabbed five rebounds.

Matt Pelton led Augustana with 15 points, while Voiles chipped in with 10.

After Dave Fouch nailed a three as the first half buzzer sounded to give the Storm a 40-32 lead, Barragan opened play in the second half with his fourth trey of the contest as Simpson opened an 11-point advantage.

Augustana (1-0) then went on a 14-1 run in taking a 46-44 lead with 9:39 remaining in the second half. Simpson narrowed the Vikings lead - which reached as high as six points - to two on Dau's late three.

Simpson returns to action this weekend when it travels to the Illinois College Tournament for games on Friday and Saturday. The Storm opens the tournament against Illinois College at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Saturday's opponent is to be determined based on the first day's results, but Simpson will tip-off at either 1 or 3 p.m.
