Six players earn academic all-district recognition
INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson College women's soccer team had six players earn Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Communicators on Tuesday.
Abby Cozzoni made her third consecutive appearance on the academic all-district team, while Cassie Nash made her second. Jordyn Foelske, Hailey Kowzan, Megan Roberts and Julia Wagoner were all first-time honorees.
The College Sports Communicators, formerly known as College of Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA), recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. To qualify, all nominees must be a sophomore in academic standing, a starter or key reserve, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher. The full team can be viewed by clicking here.
An elementary education major, Cozzoni becomes the first player in program history to earn three academic all-district awards from the organization. The senior defender started all 19 matches and logged a team-high 1451 minutes played, helping the Storm post six shutouts and a 1.36 goals against average.
Nash is a two-time academic all-district honoree earning a degree in sports administration and multimedia journalism. She was named the American Rivers Conference Offensive MVP after tallying 24 goals and seven assists this season, logging seven multi-goal performances and eight game winners in 19 games.
Foelske is majoring in elementary education with endorsements in reading, math and social studies. She played 18 of 19 matches and amassed 15 points during her sophomore campaign, scoring six goals and assisting three more.
Kowzan is studying health and exercise science as well as physical education teacher education with endorsements in health and coaching. She tied for first on the team with seven assists and recorded two goals to finish the season with 11 points.
A psychology major at Simpson, Roberts registered six goals and three assists for a total of 15 points. Her accomplishments were highlighted by becoming the first Storm player to score a hat trick in five years in Simpson's road win over Central.
Wagoner is majoring in health and exercise science. She started 17 of 19 matches, finishing tied for second on the team with five assists. The junior midfielder also scored two goals, including the game winner against UW-River Falls.
All six honorees will now be placed on the Academic All-America ballot with first-, second- and third-team honorees slated to be announced in early December.
