Trio of gymnasts qualify for NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Simpson College men's gymnastics team had three individuals announced as official qualifiers for the 2023 National Collegiate Men's Gymnastics Championships taking place April 14-15 on the campus of Pennsylvania State University. Additionally, the Storm have three individuals designated as alternates.

Sterling Pariza and Michelangelo Villani qualified as all-around individuals, while Alex Catchpole made the cut for parallel bars. Milo Staley is the first alternate for all-around and second alternate for horizontal bar, Camden Bontempo is the first alternate for floor and second for vault, and Kyle Kincade is second alternate for still rings.

The championships will begin on April 14 with two pre-qualifying sessions. Three teams and the top three all-around competitors not on one of the qualifying teams, plus the top three individuals on each event not already qualified on a team or as an all-around competitor, will advance into Saturday's finals session. The top eight competitors in each event during the finals will garner All-America status. 

Pariza qualified as an all-around individual with a *National Qualifying Average (NQA) of 73.125. His second-highest score of the season was just a few weeks ago at the USAG National Finals, where he earned All-American honors on floor. Simpson's other All-American from that meet, Villani, posted a NQA of 70.388. On parallel bars, Catchpole qualified with a 12.675 NQA.

*National Qualifying Averages includes an individual's four highest scores from the season, with the highest of these four scores being replaced with the conference championship meet score. At least one score must be a five-up, five count score and no more than two scores from a home meet may be counted.
