Storm ride Yarkosky, Brown over Luther
DECORAH - Drew Yarkosky (Albia, Iowa) drove in two runs, Paul Brown (Polk City, Iowa) threw eight strong innings and Simpson came from two runs down for a 5-2 win over Luther on Friday night.
The Storm (19-11, 12-6 Iowa Conference) snapped a three-game losing streak with the win, getting four runs in the fifth after falling behind 2-0 in the second.
Yarkosky got things started with an RBI single in the fifth. Ethan Hale (Clive, Iowa) scored when Dave Johnson (West Des Moines, Iowa) reached on an error, Colton Calvert (St. Charles, Iowa) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Jake Barr (Henderson, Nev.) came through with a pinch-hit, RBI single.
A pair of Simpson errors resulted in two unearned runs for the Norse (19-14, 9-8), the only blemish on Brown's resume. Brown (5-3) spread out seven hits and struck out four, getting out of a bases-loaded, one out jam in the sixth. He struck out Robby Jewell and got Kevin Bradley to ground out to second to end the inning.
Chris Dorff (Urbandale, Iowa) picked up his first save of the season, retiring three of the four batters he faced in the ninth.
Tyler Crandell (Ames, Iowa), Blake Heitmeier (Mt. Pleasant, Iowa) and Calvert all had two hits for Simpson, which faces Luther in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.
Daniel Smith (4-3) shouldered the loss and Chris Reynolds went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.
