Galbraith, men's 4x2 win titles on first day of IIAC Championships

STORM LAKE, Iowa - Sarah Galbraith won the pentathlon, the men's 4x200-meter relay took home a second title and set one of two school records to highlight the Simpson track and field team's first day at the Iowa Conference Indoor Championships.

The men's distance medley relay set the other school record as the men's team is tied for sixth place after the first day and the women are in fifth.

The championships conclude Saturday at Lamberti Recreation Center. 

Women's Highlights
• Galbraith was in third place after four events but jumped to first with a season-best 2:31.54 in the 800. She edged Wartburg's Jaclyn Stoakes by 20 points. Galbraith won the 800 and the high jump on the way to her first conference title.

• Sophomore Audrey LoVan took fifth in the pole vault, clearing 9-4 1/2, her highest placing at a conference meet.

• Running the event for the first time this indoor season, Breanna Gaster took sixth in the 5,000 meters (19:58.67).

• The distance medley relay team of Courtney Neuendorf, Elizabeth Burgus, Jessica Gronke and Sadie Timms finished one place out of all-conference contention, taking fourth (12:54.63).

Men's Highlights
• The 4x200 relay team of Emmitt WheatleyDylan KalinayTravis Tupper and Prince Krah won the conference title and reset the school record, breaking the tape in 1:29.31. The time is the fastest by a Simpson team since 2013 and set a new Lamberti Recreation Center record.

• Ian McKenzieKirk WicksKyle Hovey and Nick Yaeger crushed a 16-year old school record in the distance medley relay, finishing in 10:25.42 to place third. The previous record, set in 2000, was 7 seconds slower.

• Isaac Frazier has a big lead on the field in the heptathlon, leading by 108 points after four events. Frazier has 2,818 points, getting a bulk of those points from a dominating 6-foot, 5-inch clearance to win the high jump. The heptathlon concludes with the 60 hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters Saturday.

• Wheatley posted the top qualifying time in the 60 meters, breezing to a season-best 7.02 seconds. The effort is the sixth-fastest in school history. Wheatley also took fifth in the long jump (21-11 3/4). 

• Kalinay and Frazier qualified for finals in the 60 hurdles. Kalinay posted the No. 2 qualifying time (8.41) and Frazier came in at No. 7 (8.64).
