INDIANOLA, Iowa – Elly Leyva scored the golden goal less than a minute into overtime and St. Catherine shocked the Simpson women's soccer team, 1-0 on Wednesday night.
Leyva's goal came on a cross attempt that snuck past Simpson goalkeeper, Stephanie Cox, just 58 seconds into the extra period. The Wildcats (4-3) have won three out of their last four.
The Storm (2-8) outplayed St. Catherine for most of the night, but couldn't get past goalkeeper Danielle Mendez, who stopped all five of Simpson's shots on goal. Heather Adolph put two shots on goal and Cox made three saves to lead Simpson.
Simpson opens Iowa Conference play Saturday, Sept. 28 when it travels to Pella to take on Central. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
