Muse's two goals not enough in 3-2 loss

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Rachel Muse scored two goals but the Simpson women's soccer team couldn't pull ahead in a 3-2 loss to UW-Stevens Point on Saturday evening.

A freshman, Muse scored a pair of first-half goals as the Storm (2-7) fought from behind for from the opening minutes.

Kim Gietman gave the Pointers (2-4-2) a 1-0 lead when she converted on a penalty kick in the third minute. Muse tied it 1-1 in the 27th minute, when she fired a shot through traffic that found the back of the net.

Just seven seconds later, Shelley Samuel's first goal of the season put Stevens Point ahead again, 2-1. Muse again came up with the equalizer, scoring her third goal of the season off an assist by Amber Johnson in the 33rd minute.

The teams were scoreless for most of the second half until Sarah Meylor came up with the game-winner in the 81st minute.

Stephanie Cox made three saves in goal for Simpson while Kristen Churkey had one for Stevens Point. The Pointers finished with a slim 9-8 edge in shots taken, but put six on goal to Simpson's three.

Simpson will try to snap its two-game losing streak on Wednesday, Sept. 25 when St. Catherine comes to Buxton Stadium.
