Bird's golden goal gives Storm 1-0 win

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Katherine Bird scored the game-winning goal three minutes into the second overtime as Simpson beat Coe 1-0 at Clark Field on Saturday.

Despite out-shooting the hosts 22-3 and putting 11 shots on goal, the Storm (6-1-1, 1-0 Iowa Conference) couldn't get past goalkeeper Jillian Reynolds.

Reynolds made 10 saves for the Kohawks (3-4-2, 0-1), who managed only three shots - all on goal - against Simpson's back line.

Bird planted her fourth goal of the season into the right corner of the net off an assist from Megan Ginsberg. Bird attacked the Kohawk goal most of the afternoon, putting four of her five shots on goal. Running-mate Nicole Dillenburg fired nine shots.

In goal, Megan Petersen made one save in the first half and Jess Toyne had two stops in the final 58 minutes.

The Storm close out the weekend road trip with a stop in Rock Island, Ill. on Sunday. Simpson kicks off against Augustana (Ill.) at 1 p.m.
