INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The Simpson wrestling team jumped out to a quick lead against Graceland Tuesday night but could not hang on and fell 24-19 inside Hopper Gymnasium.
The Storm (0-2) were in search of their first win of the season against the Yellowjackets (3-0) and were aiming to avenge the team's 40-9 defeat from last season against Graceland.
Dylan McChesney repeated last week's performance and started the contest with an opening round pin in the 125-pound class. McChesney needed just 2:04 to give Simpson a quick 6-0 advantage, which was two seconds shy of his previous pin.
Sam McCoy tallied his first win of his career to give the team a 9-3 tilt after a slim 3-1 decision at 141 pounds. After Graceland brought the contest to a 9-9 standstill, Robert Silva scored his second win of the year with a 7-3 decision at 157 to give the Storm another lead at 12-9.
The Yellowjackets fought back with two straight pins to steal the momentum and set the contest at 21-12 before Simpson reeled off two wins of its own. Shyler Langley had a major decision at 184 to give the Storm four points and cut the deficit down to 21-16. Sam Mathis earned his first win of the year at 197 to make it a two-point contest at 21-19 with just one match remaining after the senior scored a 6-0 decision.
Freshman Colton Kinnison seeked his second victory of the year at 285 but was overmatched against Graceland's senior Shawn Beeson and lost 6-4 to close out the nonconference dual.
Simpson travels to Decorah, Iowa for the Luther Open on Saturday, which begins at 9 a.m.
