MT. VERNON, Iowa - Jason Kiehne took sixth place at 141 pounds and Colby Vlieger came in seventh at 285 as the Simpson wrestling team placed 12th of 16 teams at Cornell's Matman Invitational on Saturday.
Keihne scored four pins on the day, going 5-2 overall. After going 1-1 in the championship bracket, Kiehne rattled off four straight wins, three by pinfall. He pinned Central's Preston Adams (1:51) and Tristan Clark (6:06), advanced on a forfeit and pinned Coe's Levi Azinger (2:28) to get to the fifth-place match. Cross Cannone of Wartburg put Kiehne's winning streak to an end with a 13-5 major decision.
Vlieger went 3-2 on the day, getting a bye and two straight wins in the consolation bracket to get to the semifinals. He got a 3-2 decision over Coe's Kirk Owens and pinned Augustana's Ben Corlett (4:17) before losing to Buena Vista's Gable Bonner. Vlieger earned a close, 3-2 win over Morningside's Erick Carrillo in the seventh-place match.
