STORM LAKE, Iowa – Led by a second-place effort by Brett Roberts, the Simpson wrestling team brought home four place winners at the 2015 Buena Vista Open on Saturday.
Roberts won his first four matches, all by decision against scholarship competition. He beat wrestlers from Central Missouri, Iowa Lakes CC, and Morningside to get to the semifinals, where he beat Northern Iowa's Adam Drain 4-2. Roberts was pinned in the championship by Michael Pixley in the championship.
Melton also won his first four matches, getting a pin over Northwestern's Ricky Ortiz and a major decision against Iowa Central's Merrick Purcell on the way to the semifinals. There, he lost to eventual champion Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa. He beat Morningside's Steven Garcia in the consolation semifinals, then grinded out a 6-4 decision over Minnesota State's Daniel Close to take third.
Scott pinned his first three opponents on the front side of the bracket, dropping to the consolation side after a loss to eventual champion Bobby Steveson of Minnesota State in the semifinals. He picked up a win in the consolation semifinal, then lost a 4-2 decision to AJ McBroom in the third-place match.
Mize earned a win in his opening match before losing to Grand View's Tanner Werner in the second. He went on to win four in a row in the consolation bracket, including three, bonus-point wins. He eventually lost in the consolation semifinals, then lost 4-3 to Central's Jeremy Scheuermann in the fifth-place match.
