DECORAH, Iowa - Devan Berrian placed third at 133 pounds in the Silver Division to lead the Simpson wrestling team at the competitive Luther Open on Saturday.
Held Saturday, Nov. 15, the meet featured teams from all levels of collegiate wrestling throughout the Midwest. NCAA Division I programs Iowa and Minnesota were among those in attendance.
A freshman, Berrian went 4-1 in his bracket, losing a close 6-4 decision to Michael Triplett (Loras) in the semifinals. He scored a 14-1 major over Gareth Ballard (Luther) in the consolation semis before topping Shiquan Hall (North Iowa Area CC) 8-5 in the finals.
Wignall lost his first match of the day but earned a technical fall win over Tyler Ellwood (Iowa Lakes CC) before pinning Tristan Zurfluh (Luther) in the consolation bracket.
Roberts picked up a 12-9 decision over Teddy Erickson (St. Johns) in his first match of the day before losing to Darick Vancura (Minnesota State) in the quarterfinals. He majored Trevor Graves (Iowa) in the consolation bracket before his day came to a close against Jordan Newman (Wis.-Whitewater).
Eric Quador also earned a pair of wins on the day, wrestling in the 184-pound bracket of the Silver Division. He received a bye in the first round before earninga 7-2 decision over Nick Hoff (St. Johns). He fell in the quarterfinals, then earned a 4-2 decision over Nick Pegelow (St. Johns). He lost to Wouvel Chevelon (Iowa Lakes CC) in the consolation quarterfinals, coming within a match of wrestling for at least fifth place.
Simpson opens the Iowa Conference schedule Wednesday, Nov. 19 when it hosts Wartburg at Cowles Fieldhouse. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
