Nielsen reaches 1,000-point milestone

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Kate Nielsen scored 28 points in Simpson's 70-62 win over Coe on Saturday, making her the newest member of the program's 1,000-point club.

The senior from Urbandale, Iowa hit a pair of free throws with 46 seconds left to give her exactly 1,000 points for her career. She went 11-for-20 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds in the Storm's ninth straight win.

Nielsen has put up career numbers in this, her third season with the program, since transferring from Minnesota State-Mankato for her sophomore year in 2010. She is averaging 21.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game in 2012-13 while leading the Storm to an 18-1 record and a perfect 8-0 mark in conference play. Nielsen averaged 10.7 points and 6.8 rebounds in her first two seasons.

A First Team All-Iowa Conference selection a year ago, Nielsen is also one of only six players in Simpson history with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds and one of only two with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 150 steals. Through Saturday's game, she has 556 rebounds and 157 steals in her career.

Only one other Simpson player (Carla Horstman, 1,040 points from 1976-78) has reached 1,000 points in less than four seasons.

The 10th-ranked Storm host Buena Vista on Wednesday, Jan. 30.
