Close setback drops women’s basketball in national poll

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson women's basketball team lost its first game of the season on its Winter Break trip to Florida, resulting in a two-spot drop in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, which includes games played through Jan. 1.

The Storm slipped two spots to No. 16 after going 1-1 at the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach. The tournament began with a narrow 62-60 loss to (now No. 7) Amherst on Dec. 28 and ended with a 60-58 win over a one-loss Kenyon team the following day.

Simpson was also ranked in the USA TODAY Sports Top 25 Coaches Poll, coming in at No. 13 prior to the loss. The next poll won't be released until Jan. 8, though, giving Simpson a chance to add a win to its ledger. The Storm travel to Buena Vista this Saturday, Jan. 5 to open Iowa Conference play.

Iowa Conference foes Loras (22) and Dubuque (18) received votes in the poll.
