Nielsen named IIAC Athlete of the Week for second time

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Simpson women's basketball player Kate Nielsen earned Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week and Basketball Player of the Week honors for the period ending Sunday, Nov. 15, the league office announced Monday.

Nielsen, a senior forward from Urbandale, Iowa, averaged 19.7 points and 7.3 rebounds as Simpson went 3-0 last week to remain undefeated at 5-0. For Nielsen, the weekly award is her second in a row.

She went 20 of 29 from the field and 17 of 18 from the free throw line, shooting nearly 70 percent from the field and hitting on 94.4 percent of her free throws. Nielsen scored 23 points on 9-of-10 shooting in an 82-54 win over AIB Nov. 20, then scored 17 and 19 in wins over Gustavus Adolphus and Northland at the BVU Classic. Against the Golden Gusties, she just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

Nielsen and the Storm go to Mount Pleasant to take on Iowa Wesleyan on Wednesday, Nov. 28. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
