INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson softball team ran into a hot-hitting Coe squad on Monday afternoon, dropping a doubleheader to the 15th-ranked Kohawks.
Biranna Hull hit three home runs and drove in seven RBIs in game one and Coe hit nine home runs during the doubleheader, beating Simpson 14-2 in game one and 13-3 in six innings in game two.
A stiff wind blew out to left field at Simpson Softball Complex, helping a few seemingly routine fly balls carry over the fence.
Simpson got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Coe got started with five runs in the second, highlighted by Hull's first homer, a grand slam.
Hull went on to homer in her next two at bats, finishing the game 4-for-5 as the Kohawks (25-3, 7-1 Iowa Conference) finished with four long balls in the opener.
Coe got out to a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning of game two thanks to home runs from Abby Flannagan, Danielle Schlotterbeck, and Callie Morningstar.
But Coe came back with six in the top of the sixth and Simpson went down in order to end the game due to run rule.
Maddison Woddruff (13-1) went the distance and struck out 11 for the game one win and Mackenzie Laux (6-2) tossed a complete game in the nightcap. Kacee Arey (17-8) started both games for the Storm, tossing a combined six innings on the day in a pair of losses.
Buena Vista Games Moved Up
Simpson's doubleheader against Buena Vista originally scheduled for Wednesday in Storm Lake, has been moved up to Tuesday, April 16 due to projected cold, snowy weather in Northwest Iowa on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
