Simpson tops Bluffton but falls to No. 13 Trine

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Jessica Toyne homered and Chelsea Winegard tripled in a win over Bluffton but Simpson saw its perfect season come to an end with a loss to No. 13 Trine at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday.

Simpson (13-1) scored five in the sixth to come back for a 9-6 win over Bluffton in the first game of the day but mustered only one run off five hits in a 3-1 loss to Trine in game two.

Toyne homered to right in the second but Simpson trailed 6-4 before putting up five in the sixth inning. Winegard hit a two-RBI triple and Toyne and Hailey Jensen each drove in a run in the decisive frame.

Kacee Arey (7-0) came on in relief of Katlyn Ernst for the win, holding Bluffton to two runs off three hits in four innings of work.

Kate Clark hit a grand slam in the fourth for the Beavers (4-2).

No. 13 Trine 3, Simpson 1
Simpson out-hit Trine 5-3 but had just one run to show for it in the first loss of the season.

Winegard hit an RBI single in the sixth to score Leslie Downing, who pinch ran for Tori Haag after a leadoff double. Arey (7-1) allowed only two hits and two earned runs in the complete-game loss.

Andi Gasco hit an RBI single and Lauren Harris drove in two on a single one batter later as the Thunder (5-0) scored all three runs in the fourth.

Simpson has Wednesday off before facing Illinois College and Concordia-Chicago on Thursday, March 7.
