Storm tune up for IIAC Championships at Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Thanks to inclement weather throughout much of Iowa, the Simpson track and field team sent athletes to the Fighting Scot Invitational at Monmouth College on Saturday.

Simpson had a number of strong performances, including three winning efforts in the final meet leading up to the Iowa Conference Championships this weekend.

Women's Highlights

  • The 4x100-meter relay team of Bayley Fleshner, Lauren Martin, Sarah Ney and Jordan Maher ran the second-fastest relay in Simpson history, placing second in 48.84 seconds. The effort is the fastest since 1996, when the team of Barnes, Halupnick, Hoctel and Flinn ran 48.18.
  • Maher won the discus (133-04), beating one of the nation's top-20 throwers in Monmouth's Allison Devor. She also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles, running a career-best time of 15.40.
  • Fleshner beat out Maher in the 100 hurdles, finishing in 15.19.
  • Ney placed second in the 200 meters, finishing in 26.33.

Men's Highlights

  • John Cord had a busy meet, winning the javelin (168-08) and beating current Iowa Conference leader in the event, Michael Meersman of Loras, in the process. He also came in fourth in the high jump (6-02) and fifth in the long jump (21-4 3/4).
  • Brice Sheeder placed third in the 400-meter dash (50.31).

 The 2013 Iowa Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship hosted by Loras kicks off Friday, May 10 at the Rock Bowl in Dubuque. Action starts at 1 p.m. on Friday and concludes Saturday at 10 a.m.
