Storm mount comeback but fall in OT

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Simpson men's soccer team forced extra time with two goals in the final 20 minutes but lost a 3-2, double-overtime heartbreaker to Dubuque on Saturday.

The Spartans (9-3, 3-0 Iowa Conference) built a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Brayen Prothero and Nick McDonald.

"We were sluggish getting off the bus today and it showed during the first half," head coach Rick Isaacson said. "Sooner rather than later we need to eliminate the untimely mistakes we're making in the defensive third of the field."

Mark Lahart put the Storm (8-5-1, 1-1-1) on the board in the 72nd minute and Marcus Varnum fired the equalizer into the upper right corner in the 83rd minute, forcing overtime.

"I was pleased with our effort in the second half and both overtime periods, but we had already dug ourselves a hole by that point," Isaacson said. "It took a great team effort to claw our way back into this game. Unfortunately we fell just short when McDonald scored a fantastic, game-winning goal."

McDonald headed in the game-winner in the 106th minute off a cross from Jack Stefanski.

Luke Aronow made eight saves between the posts for Simpson and Jake O'Rourke had four for Dubuque.

The Storm host Central at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10.
