Storm win another overtime thriller
INDIANOLA, Iowa - Jeremy Reinert stuck a right-footed delivery into the back of the net 45 seconds into overtime, triggering a post-game celebration that has become a ritual at Buxton Stadium as of late.
For the third time this season Reinert scored the golden goal for Simpson, giving the Storm a 2-1 win over Buena Vista on Wednesday night.
Mitchell White added his conference-leading 10th goal of the season for the Storm (7-7-1, 4-1 Iowa Conference), who improved to 3-0-1 in overtime games.
"We continue to give ourselves a chance to win every time we take the field," first-year head coach Rick Isaacson said. "That is a testament to this team's character and work ethic."
The scene after the game is a familiar one, as Reinert finds himself at the bottom of a pile of jubilant teammates. The junior captain scored the game-winner in the second overtime of a 3-2 win against Culver-Stockton on Sept. 18 and did the same against Dubuque on Oct. 1.
"Jeremy continues to produce big goals in big situations," Isaacson said. "He is our coach on the field and someone we rely heavily on."
Mark Lahart crossed the ball to Reinert for the one-timer, putting Simpson on the board for the first time since the 14th minute. The Storm looked sluggish at times against Buena Vista, a team they have lost to only three times in 16 meetings.
"We didn't have our 'A' game tonight, but we fought hard," Isaacson said. "I was pleased with our effort."
Roland Pappoe chipped a shot outside of Simpson keeper Luke Aronow's reach in the 40th minute, helping the Beavers (5-7, 1-3) take a 1-1 score into halftime.
Dustin Dobbels turned away several Simpson scoring opportunities in the second half, coming away with six of his nine saves in the final 45 minutes. Aronow made two saves for the Storm.
Simpson donned pink jerseys for the game in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. The jerseys will be auctioned off, with proceeds going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Next on the slate for Simpson is a meeting with league-leading Loras on Saturday. The Duhawks (12-1-1, 4-0-1) are ranked sixth in the latest D3soccer.com poll and are coming off a 3-1 win over Wartburg. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Simpson's Buxton Stadium.
