Storm fall to Grand View despite 29 from Amsbaugh

DES MOINES, Iowa — Sam Amsbaugh had another big game but Grand View came back to beat Simpson 78-69 in a tale of two halves Sunday afternoon.

Simpson came out hot and built a 14-point lead in the first half but Grand View won the second half, outscoring Simpson 49-33 in the period while shooting better than 64 percent from the field.

Jjuan Hadnot scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half and the Vikings (4-3) opened the second half on a 15-3 run to win their sixth straight in the series. Nathan Washington added 17 points, getting 15 in the second half.

Despite the loss, the Simpson defense held Grand View 14 points below its season average. The Vikings shot just 36.8 percent from the field in the first half.

Amsbaugh finished with 29 points and 13 rebounds for the Storm (2-3), who lost their second straight. The senior went 10-for-16 from the field and 4-for-5 from beyond the arc to move into sole possession of 12th on Simpson's all-time scoring list. Conor Riordan added 21 points and Taylor Filbert had 10 rebounds.

• Amsbaugh reached double figures for the 10th straight game dating back to last season.
• He moved up three spots on Simpson's all-time scoring list on the day and is currently 12th with 1,106 points. He surpassed Zack Barragan (2008-12), Rod Ritenour (1966-69) and Chris Hoch (1986-90).
• Riordan bounced back with his fourth game in double figures after a season-low five points in the loss to Wis.-Platteville.
• Grand View improved to 21-13 in the all-time series as the teams met for the first time since the 2013-14 season.
