CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Simpson football player Taylor Nelson earned Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Offensive Player and Male Athlete of the Week honors for the week ending Sunday, Oct. 27.
Nelson, a senior quarterback from West Des Moines, Iowa, accounted for all six of Simpson's touchdowns in a 41-38, double overtime win over Coe on Saturday, Oct. 26. He finished 25 of 36 for 332 yards with three touchdowns through the air while rushing for 67 yards and three more touchdowns.
Nelson threw two touchdown passes to Brad Vogel, the second of which went for 23 yards on 3rd and 8 in the second overtime. The scoring strike was the 67th touchdown pass of Nelson's career, setting a Simpson school record. He passed Mike Donnenwerth, who threw 66 touchdown passes from 2000-03.
With Saturday's win, Nelson and the Storm (5-2, 3-1 Iowa Conference) moved into a tie for second place in the league standings. Simpson hosts Dubuque (4-3, 3-1) in a battle for second place on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m.
