WAVERLY, Iowa – The Simpson baseball team couldn't figure out the Wartburg pitching staff Monday, dropping the final two games of the four-game series 4-0 and 12-0 (7 innings).
The Storm (10-25, 6-18 Iowa Conference) managed just two hits against Max Langheinrich in the opener and two again against Parker Bolt in game two. Langheinrich struck out 10 in a complete-game win and Bolt fanned eight in six innings.
Anctil also had a hit against Bolt in the nightcap, but Austin Burlin broke up the no-no- this time, hitting a double for Simpson's first hit of the game in the fifth.
Brock Borgeson (2-2) gave up four runs – all earned – on eight hits with three walks and a strikeout in the opener. It was pitcher-by-committee in game two, with Daultan Gibson taking the loss. The first of five hurlers, Gibson (0-3) allowed five runs – two earned – on six hits with a strikeout and two walks.
Ryan Kemp went 3-for-3 with a single, double and a two-run homer in game one and went 2-for-2 with two RBIs in the nightcap for the No. 8 Knights (30-9, 20-8), who clinched the Iowa Conference regular season championship.
Simpson closes the 2015 season this weekend, hosting Dubuque in a four-game set that begins Friday at 3:30 p.m. Neither team qualified for the Iowa Conference Tournament.
