INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Simpson offense pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of four Cornell errors as the Storm remained undefeated at home with a 9-3 win Thursday night at McBride Field.
Cory Rasmussen (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) led Simpson's offensive effort, extending his hitting streak to 14 games by going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Defensively, Kyle Ruehle (Cherokee, Iowa/Washington) allowed only five hits in five innings on the hill, earning his third win of the season as the Storm (11-7, 5-2 IIAC) improved to 4-0 at McBride Field.
Drew Yarkosky (Albia, Iowa/Albia) and Justin Svehla (Lincoln, Neb./Northeast) added two RBIs each, helping Simpson rack up seven runs throughout the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
After Simpson put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead, the Rams (4-12, 2-5 IIAC) capitalized on two Storm errors for three unearned runs in the fifth, tying the affair at three.
The game didn't stay tied for long, as Simpson needed only three batters to load the bases in the home half of the fifth. After a Brad Agan (Knoxville, Iowa/Knoxville) strikeout, Yarkosky bounced an RBI single through the left side and Svehla drove in his second run of the game on a fielder's choice, giving the Storm a 5-3 lead.
The Storm tallied two more runs in the sixth and added a pair in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Bobby Bieniek (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) roped a run-scoring double into left field and later scored on Cornell's fourth error of the game to close the scoring for the Storm.
Coming on in relief of Ruehle (3-1), Jose Rodriguez (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) and Chris Dorff (Urbandale, Iowa/West Des Moines Valley) shut down the Rams, allowing only two hits in the final four innings. Dorff didn't allow a hit, striking out five of the six batters he faced.
Simpson resumes its run of four games in five days Friday evening when it opens a three-game series against Loras at McBride Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and can be heard via Webcast on www.kedb.fm. Simpson students Quinn Albrecht and Zach James will have the call, beginning with the pre-game show at 5:55.
